International Policy and Research Conference on Social
Security
ISSA, 29.09.2010 - 01.10.2010 | Luxembourg
The International
Policy and Research Conference on Social Security
will take place from 29 September to 1 October 2010
in Luxembourg on the theme of "Emerging trends in
times of instability: New challenges and
opportunities for social security".
The Conference will focus on the challenges that
various socio-economic developments pose to social
security worldwide. The current financial and
economic crisis is having an enormous impact in
terms of its suddenness, scale, and global reach.
The consequences for
social security are significant, not only due to the
depletion of reserve fund assets and increased
expenditure, but also due to its restored legitimacy
in a fragile economy.
From a broader
perspective, this crisis is connected with other
trends in the world today, including an ageing
population, globalization, changes in the labour
market, population displacement, changes in family
structures, global warming, and a crisis of values.

UNITED
CONFERENCE 23-28 October 2009 in Kiev (UA)
CALL FOR
NOMINATIONS
http://www.unitedagainstracism.org/
DESCRIPTION AND AIMS:
Nowadays the rhetoric and arguments of the far right are taking over
mainstream
political discussions and it seems that the anti-discrimination
movement is
firmly stuck in observer mode, responding to that what is put on the
table by
the far right and right-wing populists - but where are the progressive
actions
of civil society?
- It is time for the anti-discrimination movement - in Europe and
worldwide -
to rethink what are its aims & tasks and what are the tools &
possibilities in this very challenging struggle.
- It is time to evaluate our work and take into consideration all our
good
practices, but also our failures.
- It is time to discuss and rethink our working methods and strategies.
UNITED WE BUILD THE FUTURE!
Against this background UNITED organises its upcoming international
Network Conference
- 'UNITED We Build the Future! Empowering Civil society to Face New
Challenges'
- in Kiev (UA), 23-28 of October 2009. The conference forms an exchange
platform and professional working environment to discuss the future of
the
European anti-discrimination movement; to analyse new challenges; to
share
experience, know-how and good practice; and to develop new strategies
and
working methods.
Therefore Ukraine - a so called 'new democracy', evolving from a
post-soviet
country - provides the matching stage as hosting country of this
conference to
discuss the future of NGO work, empowerment of civil society and new
challenges
in the anti-discrimination field.
Ukraine declared its independence in 1991 and since then the country is
trying
to convert from a totalitarian communist regime into a democratic, rule
of law
and human rights state. Carrying the burden of the past USSR era with
its
legal, economical and state system, Ukraine struggled the first ten
years of
independence to understand what it needs to become a democratic and
independent
country in Europe.
The countries specific geo-political situation is another influencing
key
factor, which can be seen as advantage or disadvantage on its way to
become a
democratic and truly independent state. Bordering Russia and Belarus on
one
side and the European Union on the other, Ukraine is torn between
European
democratic values and eastern totalitarianism. This very special
geo-political
position makes Ukraine a transit route for asylum seekers and migrants
on their
way to enter the European Union.
The conference will, through working groups, plenary sessions and
workshops,
look at following specific issues:
rise of right wing; revisionism and history interpretation; migration
flows and
migrantophobia; institutional racism; utilisation of propaganda and
hate
speech; human rights education; minorities and community cohesion; new
challenges and new alternatives; future of international networking.
Using the capacity of the international UNITED Network, its diverse
supporters
and experts in the anti-discrimination field across Europe, the
conference will
apply the sharing of good practices and know-how to develop innovative
working
tools and methods and build capacity for a stronger and more effective
civil society.
Through the working groups below, issues like the ones mentioned
earlier will
be discussed. Your contribution will be valuable....
* Coming to Terms with the Past? Collective Memory: Perspectives and
Challenges
This working group analyse concepts of commemoration and what
implications it
has for historical-political education.
* Open Europe? Present and Future of Migration
This working group will analyse migration flows, migration policies and
raise
of migrantophobia in Europe.
* Hate Speech vs Freedom of Expression: the Role of Propaganda
What is the border between freedom of expression and hate speech?
* Teach It! Human Rights in Action
Developing antiracism educational strategies as a key to implement new
actions.
* Bring Us Together! Minorities in Europe
Community cohesion through minority rights.
* Move It! Civil Society Addressing New Challenges
How to identify new priorities, new messages, new forms for civil
society to
address current challenges.

International Conference on
'Issues in Finance and Economic Development in Developing Countries during
Globalisation
Era', Shri Ram College of Commerce, University of Delhi,
6 - 7 November 2009.
Given the current global financial crisis
it is imperative to
understand the financial structure in place in developing countries
following
the financial liberalisation policy. This liberalisation policy was
implemented
as per the philosophy of Structural
Adjustment Programmes and Macroeconomic Stabilisation
prescribed
by international financial institutions.
The era of financial liberalisation has witnessed very visible changes
in the financial structure.
The stock market, innovative risk-trading financial derivatives such as futures and options,
umbrella banking, various types of financial
institutions, dominance
of foreign capital in the capital market, exposure of traditional banks
to new
risky avenues, and a more internationally-linked capital market are
some of the
features of the new financial structure.
It is necessary to assess the extent to which the new financial
structure has
contributed to economic development, because ultimately the purpose of
the
financial system is to facilitate economic development. Has the new
financial
structure provided more stability to the developing economies, which is a
prerequisite for stable
economic growth? Such issues are pertinent to developing
countries because they have been implementing the financial
liberalisation
policy for more than a decade now, in the hope of promoting economic
development. The result,
as mentioned above, has been a structural shift in the financial system
in
these countries. This international conference is an attempt to
contribute to
the ongoing debate on the issues of finance, financial structure, and
its
association with economic development. Papers are invited from Indian
and
foreign researchers around the following themes:
Theoretical debates about financial structure and economic development
Assessment of the dominant financial structures and their impact on
investment
and production in the era of globalisation
Finance and the question of economic equity
Global financial crisis (2008-09) and its impact on developing
countries
Issues in corporate
governance, regulatory and supervisory mechanisms in the
new
financial structure
Microfinance
and economic development.
Selection of the received papers will be made on the basis of screening
by
referees. The authors of selected papers from India will be provided travel allowance
and
free accommodation as per the UGC norms. Due to limited fund, foreign
authors
of selected papers will have to make their own arrangements for travel
expenses. However, free accommodation will be provided by the college
at the Delhi
University Guest House.
The last date of submission of the abstract of the paper is 10 August 2009. The last date of
submission of the completed paper is 5 September 2009.
The date of confirmation to the selected authors is 15
October 2009. Abstracts and papers can be sent
electronically to: srccseminar@gmail.com.
